FASHION “UN” SENSE

Okay Okay, please don’t dislike me, just reading the title.🙆Believe me, Its our favourite topic after all., and after you complete reading the article , it will all make sense.

Read on  lovely ladies and tell me later if this article was helpful.

Till the late 80’s I remember Fashion in India as largely being categorised into Sarees/Suits/Jeans. Jeans and a few tops thrown in , was the ultimate WESTERN fashion for Indian women. C@Rg

The 90’s got better, with local stores opening up in Delhi’s posh GK or Bandra in Mumbai , getting stuff from neighbouring Bangkok markets and lot of that stuff travelled to tier 2 cities as well. But choices were still limited in western.

Then came all  the Biggies in early 2000’s gradually penetrating the rich Indian market and we heard names like Zara, Mango, Next, and so on. More choices, more clothes, oh la la, but more good fashion? No way …

I always used to wonder that how with so much choices both Indian ,western & a new category called Fusion,(for people who wanted both😆)  we have so much on our plate, yet something was amiss , I just couldn’t identify what? C@Rg

Until I visited some of the European countries. No, not that they are better dressed than us or they have better Fashion sense, but what they strongly did carry was their PERSONAL STYLE. They imbibed current fashion, yes, but first maintaing their style-  as it was clear that a part of their identity was defined by their style.

I very strongly feel that in all of  this huge plethora of choices and confused fast changing fashion, we truly lost touch with our personal style, our personal like /dislikes and many more. We decided to follow blindly

We just wanted it all. Whatever is selling, just buy and wear. Damn whether it makes any sense ! damn if it suits us ! and damn if we like ourselves in it !! We will make ourselves like it. Whatever it takes, after all its in fashion. On top of it , if the saleswomen aren’t enough ,the  trial rooms & the  mirrors can be cunningly deceptive and luring,  wanting you to buy whatever you think you are wearing,  as if they get  a commission to sell it.

Instead of enjoying the choices that we got and further build on our style ,  we chose to copy and follow blindly whatever was out there, as it was the easier way out. “Kya karna hai, racks pe se pasand karo, try karo, fit ata hai, toh khareed lo…oh my friend has it too, its in vogue, everyone is wearing it these days “, these thoughts add to your confidence and decision making in buying but you end up losing a little of your style each time you buy for the wrong reasons. You visit a mall and you will immediately be able to tell  store clones…if you know what I mean….if its Boot legs from a particular store, chances are that you will spot at least 10 women on a single day wearing that. C@Rg

Now how to tackle this problem and emerge a winner here with your own personal style :

There are some fixed parameters to your Fashion and some variables

Fixed

Is your body type

Your favourite colours

Your favourite  styles  (occasion-wise)

Im assuming these remain largely fixed with a few changes over a period of time.

Variables

Changing Fashion according to season

Your temporary fascination🙆😝for the changing Fashion ( different styles)

Peer pressure, social pressure

Now let me tell you a secret, if your fixed is sorted, you are almost there. Because basing your fashion sense on your fixed parameters makes you innately confident, so no matter what you wear, the confidence will take your attire to a whole new level. If you love Kanjeeverams, please go ahead and wear them, team them with whatever , modernize, urbanize, traditionalize…just don’t compromise and wear half heartedly a sharara or anything that is’nt you at all ,( but is just in vogue!) C@Rg

Now for the Variables:

Its time to invest just a few days of research on internet first,(MUST) understanding your body type in accordance with changing Fashion. Then visit the stores and try at various stores, don’t buy yet. Let it settle for a few months on the streets and in your head. You can go and buy it now and still keep it simple. C@Rg

And if you are not bored yet, please read on these do’s and dont’s as well.

1)Identify  a good Jeans brand and a particular cut that suits you. And if the brand doesn’t not have in its product range what you want,(like distressed) DONOT change to another brand easily. Make do with what looks best.

If you like Black denims, wear denims, never opt for tights/or jeggings or whatever they are. They look good only in the gym.

2) If off shoulder tops are in vogue and you have a broad chest, please don’t wear that, rather go for cold shoulder cuts( those small teeny cuts on the shoulder?) yeah right. They are current fashion and they look cool on you.

3) Dresses : wow, who doesn’t love them. There are millions of cuts, identify 2-3 for yourself and wear your perfect size. Never wear a smaller size. And please stick to those cuts & Styles .C@Rg

4) Skirts: Why not? Take care again of the length you opt for, you defeat the purpose altogether if you have ugly knees peeping out.

5) Sarees and Suits : Are only getting better. With both retaining the traditonal and modern avtars, you have no dearth of choices here and can hardly go wrong.

Its mainly the western , that’s a newer territory for the Indian Ladies, (Yeah I know its around for 20-25yrs, but still), you do need to master this Ladies. Please do not for a second think that this article is about body shaming or judging but rather the complete opposite and that is to take out your personal style. Indian Women have been ahead in almost all arenas of life, be it cooking, profession everywhere we know how to stand out, why not Fashion.

Why cant we women be unapologetic and unabashed for once, about taking care of ourselves and spending those few extra days/hours on our Fashion sense. Believe me it isn’t any less important. And if you are doing it, do it correct.

However cliched it may sound, accepting your body type is a commendable thing. Then wearing according to what looks good on it is doubly super. And to let go of Fashion that you know will never suit you, makes you the ultimate martyr.😆 C@Rg

Conclusion : All that I am saying, if you cant carry it, don’t wear it. If those heels make your walk like a duck😐, chuck them, if they make you strut sexily, wear them. If the cropped top makes you pull it again and again, chuck it, if your hubby says wow, but you are unsure, don’t buy. Is it that difficult to understand.C@Rg

After seeing every kind of fashion, wearing almost everything I still love myself in narrow fit blue Jeans, white simple top and red shoes. I love my Kanjeevarams and the Chiffons and the little black dress. Whether in vogue or not I don’t care. You know what I mean…… Go on now …. and……..dress to Kill ladies.
